From The Gabriela Los Angeles Women's March Post Release:
"Posters displaying the portraits and names of murdered Filipina women and human rights advocates were waved to publicize the deadly outcomes of US militarism and imperialism internationally, including Jennifer Laude, a Filipina transgender woman who was murdered in 2014 by US military officer Lance Pemberton who was stationed in the Philippines for regular military exercises. Last year, the US government provided 9 million dollars in military aid for Philippine President Duterte’s War on Drugs. Duterte’s drug war has amassed over 13,000 victims, affecting primarily poor people. One of those victims, a 5-year-old child named Danica Garcia who was murdered in the blasts and crossfire of hit-men serving the drug war, was illustrated on one of multiple signs exposing how the corruption of the Philippine government has even taken the lives of Filipino children.
Moreover, in 2017, the US government provided an additional 47.5 million dollars in military aid toward the Philippine military’s counterinsurgency efforts known as “Oplan Kapayapaan” or Operation Peace. In spite of the military’s campaign for “peace”, counterinsurgency efforts have resulted in the displacement of thousands of families, especially Muslim Moro and Lumad indigenous peoples, and the militarization of their communities in Mindanao as well as extrajudicial killings of human rights advocates throughout the country like Elisa Badayos and Josephine Lapira."
